Industry ready graduates-an Industry Perspective @ FETR, Bardoli on 29th January, 2015

A one-day workshop for students was organized jointly by Faculty of Engineering Technology and Research (FETR), Isroli, Bardoli The Institution of Enginners [I], South Gujarat Local Center, Surat.

Workshop was coordinated by Prof. K.B.Rathod, Prof. Jitendra B. Chaudhari and Prof. Vishal P. Bhagatwala of FETR.

FETR is having Faculty of Engineering, Technology and Research (FETR) is a self-financed degree college near Bardoli of Surat district offering five courses viz. 1) Chemical Engg.; 2) Mechanical Engg.; 3) Electrical Engg.; 4) Computer Engg.; 5) Civil Engg. with an intake of 420 students per annum.

Faculty of Engineering, Technology and Research (FETR) has organised 01 day interactive seminar on “Industry Ready Graduates-an Industry Perspective” on 29th January, 2015 in association with The Institution of Engineers [I], South Gujarat Local Center, Surat. The seminar aims to provide a platform for the industry person and students to interact and exchange their views which benefit both industry to get well focused employee and students to increase their employability. Two eminent personality from renowned industry Mr. Arul Selvan, Consultant, SAS Service, Pune (Ex. Vice President and CEO Texmaco Group, Indonesia & Thermax Ltd.) and Mr. Chandrasekar, Retd.General Manger, Quality Assurance, Tata Motors will interact with the students.

Event initialization

The workshop started with inaugural function at 10:00 A.M. The inaugural session begun with Lightening the lamp and prayer. The secretary of SVPES trust, Shree Babubhai Patel welcomed Mr. Arul Selvan with flock of flowers. The vice president of SVPES trust, Shree Manharbhai Patel welcomed Mr. Mr. K. The vice president of SVPES trust, Shree Manharbhai Patel was welcomed by Mr. K. B. Rathod with flock of flowers.

Dr. Latesh B. Chaudhari acknowledges the participants about the Institution of Engineers [I] and briefly explained the objectives of the Seminar. Mr. Arul Selvan gave some idea about the importance of this workshop.

Total 165 students from chemical and mechanical engineering department have participated in the workshop.

A brief introduction about invited experts Mr. Arul Selvan and Mr. K. Chandrasekhar, was given by Prof J. B. Chaudhari. Mr. Arul Selvan is an engineering professional of high repute, who carries more than 30+ years experience in process industry relating to an erection of boilers, mineral oil heaters, incinerators and water treatment plants. During his 23 working years at Thermax Ltd (formerly Wanson India Pvt Ltd) he has installed steam, water, mineral oil and fuel oil piping along with pumps. Besides this he has supervised erection of chimney, ducting, tanks and structures. He was also responsible for training of engineers and dealer’s engineers in the Process Heat division and Vapour Absorption Division of Thermax Ltd. He also worked as the Vice President and CEO for engineering, maintenance, and projects divisions of Texmaco Group in Indonesia catering to sectors like textiles, garments, polyester filament yarn, vegetable oil, leather and automobiles. He is a practicing engineering consultant to industries and business enterprise; providing solutions in the area of process boilers, heaters, water treatment plants, pumps and heating and cooling problems.

Mr. K. Chandrasekhar is Retd. General Manager at TATA Motors, his experience is more than 36 years covers the range of Automotive manufacturing practices from foundry, machine shops, press shops, vehicle assembly and testing. His experience also covers supply evaluation development and quality assurance. He was also responsible for implementation of the TATA Business Excellence Model (TBEM) for the quality assurance enterprise processes. He is currently working with ACMA (Automotive Components Manufacturers Association) at Pune as the “National Program co-ordinator” for the ACMA UNIDO partnership program supported by Department of Heavy Industry, Government of India.

The first session of expert talk started at 11:00 A.M by Mr.Mr. K. Chandrasekhar. He covered more on what actually happens inside the manufacturing shop and what types of skills they requires like process, quality control, materials, R & D and Mr. Arul Selvan covered on outside shop floor like sites, projects, sales, marketing, operations & maintenance. Experts discussed about the overview of an industry to get an idea about the different engineering skill required for the industry. They also covered different types of industries and different scope of work for particular engineer in each department to help students to select or to find appropriate position according to their interest in future for job satisfaction issues. During first session one Group Discussion was conducted between two group of 8 students about “Surat- The Smart City”, students discussed about the steps required for conversion into smart city, the necessity and the consequences of smart city in great details and experts had given their valuable comments.

Second session started with some video clips regarding the example of creativity and visualization skill. During this session expert had discussed various other soft skill and showed different techniques to improve such skill. At the end of session all students were divided in to small groups and asked them for solution of one problem to see their behaviour in a team and to explain the importance of team work.

Principal motivating participants

At the end of workshop, the valedictory function was carried out giving away a Memento as token of love to Mr. Arul Selvan by Shree Arunbhai Patel.  The participants also distributed the certificates by Dr. L. B. Chaudhari & Dr. G. P. Barot. The concluding speech was given by Prof. K. B. Rathod.
